At the ISHRS 2020 Virtual World Congress, Dr. Antonio Ruston raised the question of whether an improvement seen in some advertisements for hair transplantation is actually the result of finasteride vs from the actual transplant. He emphasized the role of combining finasteride and hair transplantation, especially in younger patients.

Many internet photo results may mostly be due to a finasteride effect and be deceivingly presented as fake results from surgery only. He showed outstanding results of using only finasteride in the recipient as well as the donor area. His take-away message was that starting medical therapy 6-12 months before the surgery may motivate patients to continue the therapy after the procedure to maintain the best results.
